1960s 18ct gold articulated tubogas collar with a 9ct gold and aquamarine spider.
Story: My kids are both obsessed with the nursery rhyme, Incy Wincy Spider. When I read it to them we pretend that the eight legged fellow is crawling up their necks and they giggle with joy.
When I saw this exceptional 1960s ‘gaspipe’ collar in an auction, I knew it was the perfect home for my little Victorian Aquamarine spider who was tucked away waiting to escape.
----------
Historical context: This beautiful and impressive heavy gauge 18ct gold “Gas Pipe” or “Tubo Gas” necklace was made in the 1960s in Italy, the masters of goldsmithing. It is a flexible tubular collar that sits neatly and comfortably on the neck.
Victorians cherished gold spider brooches for their dual symbolism. Spiders, embodying mystery, storytelling and diligence, resonated with a society enamoured with the occult and hard work.
